Message from the Headmaster
A number of parents have contacted me to say that they have been put under pressure by their sons to purchase “video” games which have an adult rating – such as, but not limited to, Grand Theft Auto, Gears of War and Call of Duty. These games contain unsuitable levels of violence and sexual content and are not appropriate for minors.
The argument that these boys are using is that their peers have been allowed these “popular” games and that parents are simply being unfair by not allowing them access. Some boys have also said to their parents that the age rating of games is for guidance only and is not in any way prescriptive. This is simply not true: it is illegal for children under the age of 18 to play games with an 18 rating.
My strong advice to parents is that they should not be coerced into allowing their sons access to such games and should be vigilant at home when boys do play video games, particularly if the games console is in a bedroom and headphones are used.

Year 13 Parents’ Conference
The online booking system is live at www.shiplake.parentseveningsystem.co.uk. Some teachers are now fully booked for the evening, particularly those who teach a large number of Year 13 pupils. In this event, parents will have an opportunity to fill out a form on the evening requesting an email or a phone conversation at parents’ convenience. Please also note that where teachers share the same subject, they will share notes and comments in advance of your meeting. Full reports with written comments from every teacher will also be available at the end of term.
