Year 10 - CCF - September

As part of the ongoing appraisal and improvement of our co-curricular programme, we have decided to make CCF compulsory for Year 10, starting in September 2017. It will run on Tuesday afternoons between 3.10pm–4.30pm. The rationale behind this is that we wish to ensure all our pupils have plenty of meaningful content to put into Personal Statements or CVs by the time they reach Year 13. It is hoped that, by experiencing what CCF has to offer in Year 10, many of our boys will remain involved throughout their time at Shiplake. Those who do not find CCF to their liking can at least say they have given it a try for a year and will have benefitted from what it has offered.

The year group will be split into three equal-sized groups and will spend a third of the academic year with each of the three sections: Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and Army. During this time, they will be classed as CCF recruits and will be introduced to elements of each section’s syllabuses. There will be emphasis on discipline, teamwork, leadership and learning a variety of new skills; hopefully there will be a large amount of fun to be had too! Cadet recruits will be taught basic drill and be expected to dress correctly in the service dress that will be loaned to the owner; however, they will be required to buy a pair of boots of their own.

It is hoped that, by the end of Year 10, the cadets will have been given a good introduction to what the CCF has to offer. They will then be able to choose if they wish to continue CCF in Year 11 and select one section to join.

Assistant Head Co-curricular

Summer Reading

It's the summer and you are off on holiday around the world!

Your mission this holiday is to read anything (in-flight magazine, normal magazine, newspaper or a book). Now the cool bit - take a selfie or get your family to take a photo of you reading. Make sure you and the book/magazine are in the picture.

Encourage your son or daughter to upload the picture here using their Shiplake account for the Thinking Space Google Classroom. All entries will be put in a lucky draw and a selection used for a Thinking Space display.

Happy Reading!

Mrs Sally Bayley
Thinking Space Manager

Second Hand Uniform Sale

A reminder about the second hand uniform sale, which is predominantly for parents of pupils joining in September, on Saturday 24 June (11.30am to 12.45pm in the Sports Hall). We would be grateful if parents are able to send in any items they no longer require to Reception tomorrow. All proceeds from sales go to the PA; if you wish to receive 50% of the sale price, please securely attach the labels to each garment (a safety pin is ideal). Any items without paperwork will be deemed as a donation. We can accept blazers, black crested jumpers and ‘new-design’ sports kit items (introduced in September 2014). All items must be clean and in good condition.
