Feedback on Events for New Joiners: We very much hope that those new to the School have found their transition to the Leighton Park community to be as smooth as possible. We are always keen to receive feedback about the events within our joining process and hope that you will spare a few moments to tell us how you felt about them. RSVP Advanced Performance Programme (APP): If your son/daughter is playing sport at county, regional or national level you might like to apply for a place on our APP. The APP supports students’ existing training regimes through additional strength and conditioning sessions, half-termly educational seminars and mentoring. To apply, or for more information, please see the attached form or the website. Applications should be sent to Andy Gallacher, Head of Rugby and Athletic Development, by Friday 20th September.

 

PSC Nearly New Shop – The Nearly New Shop, run by our Parent and Staff Community (PSC), will be open this Friday 20th September, 11th October and 22nd November, from 4.30-5.30pm in Fryer House. A price list is available here. Donations of sports kit or school dress that are no longer needed are welcomed. Several unnamed winter coats, that no-one has claimed from lost property, will be on display this Friday. If your son/daughter has lost a coat, please have a look or let the PSC know via email. Items which are not claimed in the near future will be given to charity. If you should have any queries, please contact psc@leightonpark.com.

 


 

 

Events and Reminders 

 

Thursday 19th September: Scholars’ Award Ceremony - All our scholars, together with their parents and guardians, are invited to a Scholars’ Award Ceremony in the Foyer of the Michael Malnick Centre (MMC) on Thursday 19th September from 6.00-7.00pm. Light refreshments will be provided and students should attend in Collect Dress. If you are arriving by car, please park in Grove carpark, accessible via the Shinfield Road entrance. If you have not yet responded to the invitation, please complete the online form.

 

Wednesday 25th September: Philosophy Evening - All are warmly invited to the next Philosophy Evening on Populism and Democracy in the Main Hall, accessed via the Michael Malnick Centre, on Wednesday 25th September at 7.00pm. For more details please see the attached information. If you should have any queries, please contact Paulo Arruda, Beliefs and Values teacher.

 

Saturday 28th September: Annual Open Morning - Attendance at Annual Open Morning on Saturday 28th September is mandatory. Students should wear Collect Dress and be aware that they are representing the School to families considering joining our community. A reminder of the Dress Code can be found here. Day students may arrive from 7.30am and breakfast will be available in Oakview as usual until 8.15am. Those who have been selected as guides must register in House using Reach before 8.15am. Those who have been allocated other areas of responsibility must register in House using Reach by 8.30am. The Open Morning will run from 9.00am to 11.00am. Parents/guardians should collect their son/daughter from their House at 11.30am. All Day students should sign out of their House upon departure using Reach. If you should have any queries, please contact your child’s tutor.

 

Saturday 28th September: PSC Volunteers for Annual Open Morning – The PSC has kindly offered to provide support from parents and guardians for Annual Open Morning. This will involve welcoming visiting families, registering them in Peckover Hall, and talking to them about your experience of the School. If you would like to help on Saturday 28th September please register your interest via https://www.signupgenius.com/go/409094AA5AA2AA4FF2-leighton1. RSVP Thursday 17th October: Launch of ‘Great Ideals Reaffirmed: Leighton Park and World War Two’ – We are looking forward to sharing the heart-warming and sobering stories of life at Leighton Park during the war years, following the success of ‘Great Ideals Reaffirmed: Leighton Park and World War One’, published five years ago. We hope you can join us in Peckover Hall at 3.00pm on Thursday 17th October for the book launch. Please RSVP to the development team to confirm attendance.

 


 

 

Year 7

 

Julian Sedgwick Visit – On Monday 16th September Julian Sedgwick, Patron of reading at the School, introduced himself to Year 7. Without failing to entertain, Julian shared valuable advice and stories of his successful career. If you would like to see some photographs of the morning please see our news story.

Friday 20th September: Fryer Parent Tea - Parents and guardians are invited to the Fryer Parent Tea which will take place this Friday 20th September in Fryer House. This is an informal gathering of parents across both year groups in Fryer House. Whilst staff will be there, it is primarily an opportunity for parents to meet each other. The PSC Nearly New Shop will also be open from 4.30-5.30pm. If you should have any queries, please contact Adrian Stewart, Head of Lower School.

Year 11 

 

Sixth Form Options - Parents/guardians may like to be aware that your son/daughter will shortly be invited for an interview with Helen Taylor, Head of Sixth Form, or Karen Grace-Langrick, Deputy Head Academic, in the Caradon Centre to discuss Sixth Form options. There will be an opportunity for students to ask questions, raise any concerns or queries and speak with current Sixth formers. We would ask you to please remind your son/daughter to attend this important interview for which they will be given an allocated time-slot. Boarders will be interviewed on Saturday 5th and Saturday 12th October.

  

Wednesday 18th September: Madrid Itinerary Evening – We are pleased to invite all students and their parents/guardians who have chosen to join our Art and Culture trip to Madrid from Friday 18th to Monday 21st October inclusive, to a Madrid Itinerary Evening in the Michael Malnick Centre tonight, Wednesday 18th September, from 6.00-7.00pm. Payment for the outstanding balance of the trip (£550), is due by Friday 20th September. Monday 7th October: GCSE Geography Field Trip – Students studying for the Geography iGCSE are invited to attend two different day field trips to the River Pang and Reading Town Centre. You will have received an email with a letter appropriate to your child’s group providing further detail. Please see the attached letters for information on Group 1 or Group 2. If you are unsure which group your child is, in or have any further queries, please contact Oliver Staines, Head of Geography.

Lower Sixth

 

Julian Sedgwick Visit – On Monday 16th September Julian Sedgwick, Patron of reading at the School, led a workshop with the Lower Sixth International Baccalaureate students. RSVP Saturday 21st September: Psychology Trip to the Reading Crown Courts – A Level Psychology students to visit the Reading Crown Courts are invited to visit the Reading Crown Courts from 10.00am–2.00pm on Saturday 21st September. Students are expected to make their own way to and from the location and may require the use of public transport. Please complete the online booking form by Thursday 19th September, if your son/daughter would like to attend. Please see the attached letter for details and contact Jo Toovey, Psychology Teacher if you have any further questions.

 

Thursday 26th September: Gap Year Careers Fair - There will be a Gap Year Careers Fair for students in the Lower and Upper Sixth from 3.30-5.30pm in Peckover Hall where we will be hosting a number of companies and providers of structured gap year programmes. Students will have the opportunity to meet with and discuss different options with our visitors. Please encourage your son/daughter to attend if they are considering a gap year. If you should have any questions, please contact Sally Saunders, Head of Careers.

 

RSVP Tuesday 8th October: National Archives History Trip – History students will have the opportunity to take part in a workshop and conduct research using original documents at the National Archives, to support coursework and learning. The school minibus will leave the Park at 8.15am and return by 5.00pm. Please complete the online booking form by Friday 27th September, if your son/daughter would like to attend. Please see the attached letter for details and contact Richard Duckett, History and Politics Teacher, if you have any further questions.

 

RSVP Monday 2nd December: Politics Trip to Westminster Hall – Sixth Form Politics students are invited to attend this year’s Polecon Conference to gain an insight into current political ideas from those at the heart of Westminster. Please complete the online form by Monday 23rd September to indicate your child’s attendance and to confirm your proposed method of payment (£52), which is due on the same date.
