PSC Book Group – The PSC are pleased to announce the Reading List and Meeting Dates for 2020/21, perfect for your summer holiday reading. The first book is ‘Girl Woman Other’ by Bernadine Evaristo which will be discussed via an online meeting on Monday 28th September at 7.30pm. BSA Covid-Safe Charter - We continue to carefully plan for the reopening of the School in September. As part of this, we are pleased to confirm that we have signed up to the Boarding Schools Association Covid-Safe Charter.

 

Term Dates 2020-2021 - Please find attached term dates for the next academic year, 2020-2021. If you should have any queries, please contact School Office.

 

School Fees 2020-21 - The attached letter regarding school fees for the next academic year, 2020-2021, was sent to parents/guardians of students from Years 7 to Lower Sixth, last Wednesday 17th June. An additional letter regarding discount for parents paying annual fees in advance was sent on Friday 19th June. Houses and Boarding Letter – The attached letter was sent to all parents and guardians last Wednesday, 10th June, regarding plans for House teams and boarding.

 

RSVP Mouthguard Fittings – Our mouthguard provider, Impact, will be visiting Leighton Park on Thursday 10th September. If you would like your son/daughter to be fitted for a mouthguard, at a cost of £54, please complete the online form. LP Wool Pack Community Knitting Group - English teacher, Merion Taynton, has recently established a community knitting group, the LP Wool Pack. A few of the causes they aim to support through a variety of knitting projects are; local care homes, animal rescue centres, baby charities and the premature baby unit at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. If you would like to find out more or take part (contributing as little or as much as you like), please join the private Facebook group, LP Wool Pack, where members are encouraged to communicate, share pictures and ideas, or alternatively, please contact Merion.

 

LP Donate - To support those in need we are collecting donations for our partner organisations. In an extra special final LP Donate for the summer term we are sending care packages to Age UK Berkshire. Items are needed by 9.00pm, Monday 29th June. Ooh Look! LP Art Show – Last week, the Art Department launched their end of year exhibition for 2020. Tim’s Marathon on the Park – Tim has now exceeded his phenomenal target of raising £3,000 for Whitley CDA! He has recorded this short video to say thank you to everyone who donated to and supported the cause.

Monday 22nd – Friday 26th June: Sports Week Pentathlon – It’s National School Sport Week this week! Together with the Youth Sport Trust, our Sport, PE and Wellness Department are challenging students, staff and parents to compete for the sought-after Fryer House Sport Trophy and Senior Houses’ Richard Coleman Shield, in an at home pentathlon. For all the information you will need, please see the instructional video from Director of Sport, Jez Belas, on the Sport, PE and Wellness Google Classroom. All results must be submitted by 5.00pm, Monday 29th June. Game on!

 

Wednesday 24th June: LP Unlocked: The Festival of Creative Communication – This evening, we are excited to launch LP Unlocked: The Festival of Creative Communication. This year, outstanding creative work across the disciplines of Art, Dance, Drama, Film and Music has been produced. We encourage you to explore each diverse area to experience the extraordinary gifts and talents of our students. The link to the festival will be shared by 7.00pm today. Saturday 27th June: Digital Music for a Summer’s Evening – Undeterred by Covid-19, the popular al fresco concert, Music for a Summer’s Evening is moving online! Join us this Saturday, 27th June for a varied selection of enjoyable musical pieces; you can even picnic in your own garden! RSVP Wednesday 1st July: Whole School Collect – We will be holding our very first virtual celebration of achievement enabling the whole community to come together, albeit remotely, on Wednesday 1st July at 2.00pm. RSVP Modern Foreign Language Choices for Year 8 Please see the attached letter regarding your son/daughter’s language options for Year 8 and complete the online form to confirm their preference by this Friday, 26th June. Kit Collection and Item Return to Fryer House – As mentioned in the email from Adrian Stewart, Head of Lower School, on Tuesday 23rd June, you will shortly receive communication regarding the opportunity to book a slot for collecting kit and emptying your son/daughter’s locker at Fryer House. Please note that this is being organised in an effort to minimise contact between families. All games kit found in the House has been washed by the School Laundry, and then gathered in named piles. Unnamed kit has been collected according to type. We have an additional area that is currently empty for anyone who would prefer their kit to be passed to the Nearly New Shop and Africa collections. Year 8

Year 9 Newcomers’ Day – In a change from the format of previous years current Year 8 students from Fryer are not expected to join our incoming external Year 9 students for Newcomers’ Day on Friday 4th September. The first day of term for 2020-21 Year 9s will be Monday 7th September. If you should have any queries, please contact Mark Simmons, Head of Year 9.

Tuesday 30th June: Virtual Orientation Session – Parents/guardians and students in Year 8 are warmly invited to a Virtual Orientation Session in advance of joining Year 9 in September. Please join using this Zoom link with Meeting ID 865 4610 8908 and password 5PH2dP. There will be a short introduction from Head of Year 9, Mark Simmons, followed by individual breakout rooms for each Senior House, hosted by Housemasters and some members of their House teams. You will be automatically allocated to the breakout room appropriate to your child’s House allocation. You will be receiving a separate email regarding your child’s Senior House allocation on Thursday 25th June. Public Examination Results - A letter from Karen Gracie-Langrick, Deputy Head, Academic, will shortly be sent to parents and guardians of students in Year 11 regarding the collection of GCSE results in August.

 

Collect Dress and Sports Kit - The School is updating Collect Dress. The only change for next year's Lower Sixth Form students is that they will be provided with an LP pin to wear on their lapels. Due to global supply chain issues, there may be a delay in the supply of some new sportswear items. We are working closely with Schoolblazer on this. If any items are not available by the start of term, then the School will provide students with the previous branded versions at no additional cost. The revised Dress Code, from September 2020, is available here. If you are interested in this five week programme, please see the attached letter sent to all students in Years 11 – Upper Sixth on Thursday 11th June and sign up online. University Applications and UCAS Registration - If you are currently in the Lower Sixth and would like to apply to university in the UK, you must now create an account with UCAS. The buzzword that will link your account to the School is Leighton2021. Sally Saunders is delivering weekly sessions on the application process, writing personal statements and studying in other countries.
