Shiplake College - Weekly Bulletin

Dear Parents

Please see below this week's notices from the College.

Saturday Arrangements

Please click here for details regarding Saturday 1 October.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

We are looking forward to welcoming parents, staff and friends of the College to our Macmillan coffee morning tomorrow, Friday 30 September. The event will take place in the OVR (next to the Great Hall in Skipwith) from 8.00am to 10.00am. Parents are encouraged to bring a cake as part of the fundraising effort - baked or bought goodies can be dropped directly to the OVR, or to Reception by 8.00am if you are unable to stay for the morning. Guests are encouraged to make a donation in return for their coffee and cake (to be consumed that morning or taken away!) so please do bring change. It is always a lovely morning and a good opportunity to meet other Shiplake parents or catch up with old friends; we very much hope to see you there.

Sixth Form Open Morning

We are delighted to have record numbers booked to attend our Sixth Form Open Morning on Saturday 1 October. A final reminder that all Year 12 and Year 13 pupils are expected to attend, unless an absence request has been approved by the Headmaster.

Calling all String Players

The College Orchestra, Opus, is looking to recruit parents and relatives who play the violin, viola, cello or double bass. This term the orchestra is rehearsing Bach’s Sleepers Wake and Donny Hathaway’s This Christmas in preparation for the Winter Concert on Thursday 24 November. Both works have lush string parts and the latter features the seventies’ signature strings sound. So if you would like to join the fun at rehearsals from 3.10pm – 4.10pm on Fridays or even just ask for emailed parts so that you can practice at home, it would be great to hear from you.

Lunchtime Concert - Friday 30 September

12.40pm – 1.10pm, Lecture Theatre

This month’s Lunchtime Concert features performances from Bobby and Fergus Howard-Jones (both piano), Michael Ball (sax), Josh Howard (sax), Ollie Dorrell (sax), Ethan Overton (classical guitar), Sam Nike (piano), Will Mandondo (singing) and Luke Mullin (singing). All visitors welcome to this bumper edition!

College Harvest Festival

The College Harvest Festival services will be organised and led by the community of Burr House and these will take place in the Chapel services on Monday 3 October and Thursday 6 October.

A reminder that we have asked students to donate £2.00, instead of food items, to pay for the Reading Drop In Centre's gas bill again this year. In addition we would also like to collect a new pair of socks (in a darkish colour, size 8-11), as many homeless people are prone to infections. Housemasters and Matrons will collect the donations. Please see last week's bulletin for full details.

I thank you very much in advance for helping with this project.

Private Cricket Tuition

Shiplake College is again offering high quality extra cricket coaching through Berkshire County Coach, Chris Ellison. Chris is one of only a handful of ECB Level 4 qualified coaches in the country and we are fortunate to have him so closely linked to cricket at Shiplake.

These small group sessions are planned to give our young cricketers a real boost before next season. There will be six one hour sessions on a Thursday evening (Juniors 6.00pm - 7.00pm and Seniors 7.00pm - 8.00pm), as well as lunchtime sessions for Lower School. All sessions will begin on Thursday 3 November running until Thursday 8 December. The cost is £48.00 for the six sessions and with your permission I will add this to the College bill.

If you wish for your son/daughter to have private cricket tuition, please email your consent by Monday 31 October.
