All Parents and Guardians

 

Changes to the School Day 2019/20: After listening to students, staff and parents, we will be trialling some changes to the School day from September 2019. Registration will start 15 minutes later, at 8.15am, and take place in classrooms - creating a later but more focused start to the School day and enabling all our students to have breakfast. Period 1 will begin at 8.30am. The School will also provide students with a snack at 4.30pm to help them get the most out of their co-curricular activities and supervised prep time. Revised Term Dates for 2019/20 – Please find attached the revised term dates for the next academic year. You may be aware that the Government have moved the bank holiday from 4th May to 8th May to coincide with the 75th anniversary of VE Day. This revised document also reflects the change to the timing of the School day which will commence at 8.15am rather than 8.00am from September.

 

PE and Games Kit 2019/2020: There are a number of changes to the PE and Games kit for 2019/20. The details are provided on the attached letter. If you should have any queries, please contact Jeremy Belas, Director of Sport.

 

School Uniform – Schoolblazer are offering free UK delivery on all orders placed between 1st-14th July. International boarders may request for items to be delivered to Leighton Park School directly if required. Please ensure the order is clearly labelled with the student’s name and year group on the order. Please visit Schoolblazer’s website to place your order.

 

RSVP Mouthguard Fittings: Mouthguards are required to be worn by all students playing rugby or hockey. Leighton Park uses Impact to professionally fit mouthguards. Please complete the attached form regarding fitting dates for the Autumn 2019 season. This form also gives you the option to ‘opt out’ should you wish.

 

Co-Curricular Programme Autumn 2019: An exciting and diverse range of co-curricular activities is currently being planned for the Autumn Term by our dedicated teaching staff who are keen to offer an inspiring and engaging programme of interesting hobbies. The choices available will be collated into a booklet which will be available on the website and shared with you during the Summer holidays, around mid-August. There will be a signup sheet in Google for your son/daughter to complete before the start of the Autumn Term, indicating their preferences. Please ensure their choices fit with the logistics of your family’s other commitments. The deadline for signing up is Thursday 5th September. PSC Book Group 2019/20: The book choices and dates for the PSC Book Group meetings next year are available here for any readers keen to start over the summer holidays! All parents, guardians and staff are welcome to join the group. For more information, please visit the PSC page on the website and select the book group tab.

 

End of Term Grade Sheets and Reports - End of term Grade Sheets for Year 9 students and End of Term Reports for Years 7, 8, 10 and Lower Sixth IBDP students will be made available via the School Portal by the end of Thursday 4th July. If you have problems logging on to the School Portal or viewing your child’s report please email Elaine Storey, Data Manager

 

School Portal Maintenance - We will be carrying out some planned maintenance on the School Portal during the holidays. We hope that there will be little or no disruption to the availability of the Portal however parents/guardians should be aware of the possibility. If you should have any problems, please contact Elaine Storey, Data Manager

 

School Fees 2019/20 – A reminder that there is an opportunity for parents to benefit from a discount on next year’s fees for 2019/20 if they are paid by 31st July 2019. Please see the attached letter for details of the discount. The letter from the Chair of Governors regarding next year’s fees can be read again here. Information regarding changes to additional costs can be found on our website. If you should have any queries regarding fees, please contact Jenny Rowe, Finance Manager.

 

School Transport 2019/20 – A reminder that a full half term’s written notice is required if you no longer wish to receive transport for your child. Any changes requested now will take effect following Long Leave in October. Requests should please be emailed to Transport.

 

Safeguarding - Please see the attached notice from West Berkshire Safeguarding Children Partnership regarding Reading Festival and increased safeguarding awareness over the Summer holidays. There is also information available here for parents and guardians on why some young people take and share nude selfies, and how to support your child if an image has been shared. If you should have any queries, please contact Nicky Hardy, Assistant Head (Head of Pastoral Welfare).

 

Updated IT Policy – The IT Acceptable Use policy has been updated and is now available on the School website here. If you should have any queries, please contact David Pacey, Director of ICT.

 

RSVP Matthew Pott Peace Award – The Matthew Pott Award was established in memory of an Old Leightonian to reward students, initially for actions in support of peace or interpretations of peace in different media. It has now broadened to a wider remit of actions for the good of others. If parents, guardians, staff or students would like to nominate a member of the student body for the award please email Pablo Gorostidi, MFL teacher, with the name of the student and the rationale behind your support by Thursday 27th June.


 

  

Events and Reminders   

 

Friday 28th June and Thursday 4th July: Lost Property – In accordance with our Lost Property policy the lost property collected during the Summer Term will be on display outside Townson from 4.15pm to 5.15pm on Friday 28th June and at 1.00pm on Thursday 4th July. If you think your child may have misplaced any items, please do check, as any unclaimed items will be given to the Nearly New Shop or to charity after this date.

  

Saturday 29th June: Music for a Summer’s Evening – All are warmly invited to join us for our annual al fresco music event, taking place this year on Grove field from 4.00pm-8.00pm on Saturday 29th June. Please see the poster here. Picnics are welcome and you may like to bring chairs and blankets to sit on. Food and drink will be available from the PSC stall and from our Sixth Form fundraising group, Amicus. Gazebos for each of the Houses will be on the field offering cheese and biscuits for parents and guardians who would like to join their child’s House team for a catch up and bite to eat. If you would like to bring edible contributions to support your House tent, please do. Please remember that the School is a nut-free site. If the weather is wet, the event will be relocated to Main Hall. If you should have any queries, please contact Rosemary Scales, Director of Music.

 

RSVP Saturday 29th June: PSC Pimm’s Bar and Barbecue - The PSC will be running a Pimm’s and Soft Drink Bar and a Barbecue supporting the upcoming Music for a Summer’s Evening. Many thanks to those of you who have already volunteered to help. There are plenty more slots to fill so if you are able to spare some time to set up, clear up or help during the event (4.00pm-8.30pm), please sign up here. Monday 1st July: Carpool / Cycle to School Day – The Year 7 and 8 CAS champions are organising a cycle to school / carpool day, to try to reduce the traffic coming in and out of the Park, and cut carbon emissions. Students who can, are encouraged to cycle to school and meet at Fryer House with your bike at 7.50am for a photograph. Those who would prefer to carpool, please send in a selfie of your fun time in the car. Any queries, and carpooling photos, should be sent to Anne Fitzsimons, Maths teacher.

 

Wednesday 3rd July: Sports Day – A reminder that the House Track and Field Championships (Sports Day) is next Wednesday, on ten acre field behind Fryer House. All parents and guardians are welcome to come along and watch. If you should have any queries, please contact Jez Belas, Director of Sport.

 

RSVP Friday 30th August: Pre-Season Hockey Training – Please see the attached letter regarding pre-season hockey training taking place before the start of the Autumn Term. If you would like your daughter to attend please complete the form here and pay the £10 required before the end of term, Thursday 4th July. Saturday 28th September: Annual Open Morning – Our students are the best ambassadors for our school whether they participate as guides, in activities or in classroom demonstrations. Parents and guardians are reminded that their child’s attendance at Annual Open Morning on Saturday 28th September from approximately 8.30am-12.30pm is mandatory. Should there be any circumstances which may prevent your child attending, please write to the Head, Matthew Judd, for consideration of your request to be excused.


 

  

Year 7

 

French Trip: There is a blog available here following the activities of the Year 7 students currently in France. You will need a google account in order to access the blog. If you do not yet have a google account, details of how to set one up are available here.

 

The Big Read for KS3: Please see the attached letter regarding a shared read for Key Stage 3 students in Years 7-9 taking place next academic year. If you should have any queries, please contact Chris Routh, Librarian, or Tom Rawlings, Head of English.

 

Monday 1st July: Mandarin Trip – Students joining the Mandarin trip to the British Museum should bring a water bottle, a pen and small notebook, an umbrella and waterproof or suncream depending on the weather, and can wear smart casual clothing. We anticipate returning to school by 5.30pm. If you should have any queries please email Lan Kuang, Mandarin teacher.

Tuesday 2nd July: Orientation Day for Year 9 – Current Year 8 students will be meeting new students joining the School for Year 9 and sharing lessons and activities with their new cohort at the Year 9 Orientation Day on Tuesday 2nd July. Please ensure your son/daughter has their PE kit, swimwear, a waterproof coat and suncream (if appropriate) in School that day. Parents and guardians are invited to meet Mark Simmons, Head of Middle School, in Main Hall at 3.15pm. Please park at the Shinfield Road entrance by Grove House and enter Main Hall via the Michael Malnick Centre. After the talk, parents and guardians will join their son/daughter in their new Senior House for refreshments at 3.45pm. Please see here for more details.

 

Wednesday 4th September: Starting Year 9 – Please note that the first day of the Autumn Term for those starting Year 9 next academic year is Newcomers’ Day, Wednesday 4th September. Please ensure that students arrive at their new Senior House by 8.00am in Collect Dress and bring their school bags and sports kit with them. Parents and guardians are invited to meet their son/daughter in their House at 4.30pm when there will be a talk from the Housemaster/mistress and an opportunity to see your child’s tutor. A barbeque on School Field will follow, with the chance to catch up with other Year 9 parents / guardians and their children. Should it rain, the social event will be moved to Oakview restaurant. Please note that there will be no breakfast for day students on Newcomers’ Day and that the School buses will not be running.

The cost is £40 and includes a session at GoPerform gym and a seminar from a professional football coach on 'winning teams'. There will also be a fixture against Reading Colts on the Friday afternoon followed by a BBQ for players and parents. If you have any queries, please contact Andy Gallacher, PE teacher.

Friday 13th September: Sixth Form Evening Event Parents and guardians whose sons/daughters are joining the Lower Sixth in September are invited to the Sixth Form Evening Event on Friday 13th September from 6.00pm-8.00pm in the MMC. There will be a welcome talk from Helen Taylor, Head of Sixth Form, and the Head, Matthew Judd, followed by drinks and canapes in the Upper Foyer. Please see the invitation attached.
