Good Schools Guide
Parents may be interested to hear that we had a visit from one of the team at the Good Schools Guide last term. The Guide is an independent and impartial British directory written “by parents, for parents.” It is compiled by a team of editors who visit schools on a regular basis, interviewing parents, staff and pupils and collecting the valuable knowledge and insights that data and league tables alone cannot provide. The creators describe it as “the straight-talking, independent, unbiased and fun-guide to UK state and private schools”. Please click on the link below to read the new write-up for the College.

Year 9 and 10 T&P Trip to Nepal – October 2017
The Theology and Philosophy Department is excited to launch a 12 day educational and cultural trip to Nepal throughout October half term 2017. This will be open to all current Year 9 and Year 10 T&P students. To clarify, as GCSE options have not been made yet any Year 9 is able to go on the trip regardless of whether they take the subject next year.
The aim of the trip is to enrich and broaden students' learning and understanding of Buddhism and experience a way of life and culture very different to our own. The study of Buddhist beliefs, practices and ethics is examined in 75% of the Religious Studies GCSE and Year 9 pupils are also currently studying the religion. The trip will be of significant academic value. Additionally, we will visit the main sites and attractions within Nepal exposing pupils to the rich history and culture of this fascinating country.
Highlights include living like a monk and staying the night in a Buddhist Monastery, a trek in the Himalayas, vising a Tibetan Refugee camp and Gurkha Museum and exploring the birthplace of the Buddha in Lumbini. A provisional date of Monday 16 January at 5.45pm has been booked for a talk in the Lecture Theatre, where a more detailed itinerary and costs will be discussed.
To confirm your attendance, or declare an interest if you are unable to attend the meeting, please email Miss Morgan (email@example.com).
Miss Elizabeth Morgan
Head of Theology and Philosophy
Note from the Chaplain
Happy New Year. I would like to thank parents for their generosity at the Carol Service and £1,218.63 was raised from the retiring collection. Also a parent held a charity event and at his request the proceeds from this were given to the Reading Drop-in Centre. Therefore a cheque for £1,593.63 was sent to them just before Christmas. The Centre were immensely grateful to receive this very generous donation.

Please could you ensure that your son has a set of shin pads and a gum shield for hockey training and fixtures, as they will not be able to join in with the session/game without one. If you need to purchase any additional kit, the school is entitled to 25% off Reece Hockey items, which can be viewed here.
Saturday training will commence on 14 January once the squads have been decided. This will run between 9.00am and 10.30am, with all players in the U14, U15 and first team squads expected to attend unless they have been excused by the Headmaster. The sessions will be skill and fitness based. We also encourage students to pursue their hockey outside of school, so those who are playing for local clubs on Saturdays are excused once they have sought permission. There are a large number of clubs in the local area which are always looking for new, young joiners, such as Henley Hockey Club, Reading Hockey Club and Sonning Hockey Club.
Mr Tom Walter
Head of Hockey and Girls' Games
If your son or daughter is rowing this term and would like to purchase some Shiplake College Rowing Kit please follow the links below. This order window will close on 16 January and the kit will be produced for late February.
If your son or daughter hopes to race for the College this season the only must-have bit of kit is the rowing all-in-one suit. The other kit listed is nice to have but by no means essential. Any non-branded black base layers and leggings are acceptable.
