Pepper Lane Delays: Wokingham Borough Council have confirmed that there will be delays on Pepper Lane from Friday 6th September (tomorrow) to Saturday 7th September, but the road will not be closed. The Council’s workforce is likely to be working on one side and will put traffic lights in place, switching to the other side the next day. The road will be re-opened either late Saturday evening or early Sunday morning. You may prefer to use our Shinfield Road entrance on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th to avoid unnecessary delays.

 

 

Registration Time Reminder: Please note that from Thursday 5th September Registration will start at 8.15am and take place in classrooms. Period 1 will begin at 8.30am. If you should have any queries please contact Eddie Falshaw, Deputy Head.

 

 

Revised Term Dates for 2019/20: Please find attached the revised term dates for this academic year. You may be aware that the Government have moved the bank holiday from 4th May to 8th May to coincide with the 75th anniversary of VE Day. The term dates for 2020-21 are also available here and on our website.

 

 

Parents’ Evenings for 2019/20: Please see the attached reminder of dates for Parents’ Evenings during the forthcoming academic year. Further details for each event will be sent out closer to the time.

 

 

Co-Curricular Programme Autumn 2019: An exciting and diverse range of co-curricular activities has been planned for the Autumn Term by our dedicated teaching staff who are keen to offer an inspiring and engaging programme of interesting hobbies. The booklet was emailed to you during the holidays and can be viewed on our website. If your son/daughter has not yet considered their preferences, please discuss the options with them and ensure their choices fit with the logistics of your family’s other commitments. The deadline for signing up is Friday 6th September. Any new students who may require support with the sign up process should speak to their tutor. There are some suggestions from Jenny Powlesland, Head of Teaching and Learning, for those seeking activities offering academic stretch and challenge. Peter Scoggins, Head of Drama, would also like to highlight the additional option of LAMDA. Events and Reminders   

 

Monday 9th September: Whole School Photograph - The whole School photograph will be taken at 10.00am on Monday morning. Students should be neat and tidy in Collect Dress and boys must wear a tie. If you are unsure about any aspect of Collect Dress please consult the Gold Book. If you should have any queries please contact Eddie Falshaw, Deputy Head.

 

 

Monday 16th September: PSC Book Group: All parents, guardians and staff are welcome to join the PSC Book Group which meets twice a term in the School’s Library. The book choices and dates for this year are available here.  For more information, please visit the PSC page on the website and select the book group tab. The next meeting is on Monday 16th September when we will be discussing ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’ by Heather Morris. If you should have any queries, please email psc@leightonpark.com.

 

 

Tuesday 17th September: PSC Meeting: All parents, guardians and staff are welcome to the Parent and Staff Community (PSC) Committee Meeting taking place in the Cadbury Room on Tuesday 17th September from 6.30-8.30pm. Thursday 19th September: Scholars’ Award Ceremony – All our scholars, together with their parents and guardians, are invited to a Scholars’ Award Ceremony in the Foyer of the Michael Malnick Centre (MMC) on Thursday 19th September from 6.00pm to 7.00pm. Light refreshments will be provided and students should attend in Collect Dress.

 

 

Wednesday 25th September: Philosophy Evening – All are warmly invited to the next Philosophy Evening on Populism and Democracy in the Main Hall, accessed via the Michael Malnick Centre, on Wednesday 25th September at 7.00pm. Saturday 28th September: Annual Open Morning – Our students are the best ambassadors for our school whether they participate as guides, in activities or in classroom demonstrations. Parents and guardians are reminded that their child’s attendance at Annual Open Morning on Saturday 28th September is mandatory. Should there be any circumstances which may prevent your child attending, please contact your child’s Head of Section for consideration of your request to be excused. We anticipate the event will finish around 12.00pm.


 

 

Year 7

 

Reading List for Year 7: Please find attached the recommended reading list prepared by our Library Team with age appropriate books for students in Year 7.

 

 

RSVP ISA Dance Competition 2019: If your son/daughter would like to be part of the team entering the Independent Schools Association Dance Competition 2019, please contact Beth Butler, Dance teacher, as soon as possible. Further details are available on the attached poster.

 

 

Participation in Dance Lessons: If your son/daughter is unable to participate fully in the physical aspects of their dance lesson, please contact Beth Butler, Dance teacher, as soon as you are aware this is the case so that relevant alternative work can be prepared.

 

 

Friday 6th to Saturday 7th September: Fryer Camping – We are looking forward to enjoying Fryer Camping with our new Year 7 students tomorrow evening. Please drop your son/daughter off on Friday morning with a pillow, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, PJs, towel, washkit and casual clothing suitable for physical activities. Collection is from Fryer House at 11.30am on Saturday morning. Please be aware of the notice above relating to delays around our Pepper Lane entrance on Saturday. Friday 13th September: Evening Event – Parents and guardians of new Fryer students are invited to a welcome evening social event on Friday 13th September from 7.00pm to 9.00pm in Oakview restaurant. The evening is an opportunity to meet other parents and guardians, catch up with Tutors and talk to our senior team. Students are not expected at this event and we ask that families make other arrangements for their children. If you should have any queries, please contact Adrian Stewart, Head of Lower School.

 

 

Thursday 19th September: Tutor Student Parent Evening – Parents and guardians with their sons/daughters will be invited to the first Tutor Student Parent evening of this academic year on Thursday 19th September. Appointments will be 10 minutes in duration. Further details on booking your appointment will be shared in next week’s eBulletin.


 

 

Year 8

 

The Big Read for KS3: Please see the attached letter regarding a shared read for Key Stage 3 students in Years 8-10 taking place this academic year. Those in Year 7 last year should already have received their book. New Year 8 students will shortly receive their copies of ‘Maggot Moon’ by Sally Gardner. If you should have any queries, please contact Chris Routh, Librarian, or Tom Rawlings, Head of English.
