Shiplake College - Weekly Bulletin

Dear Parents

Please see below this week's notices from the College.

Pupils' Cars

Over the past few years the number of pupils driving a car to and from school has escalated, almost at an exponential level. Currently, nearly 50% of Year 13 travel to school in their own cars. An increasing number of Year 12s are passing their driving test and have either been allocated a family car or have their own. One Year 11 is also learning to drive.

The College has no parking area for pupils’ cars. Space on campus is limited and any parking spots available are needed for teaching and non-teaching staff, contractors and visitors. It is a school rule that pupils may not drive onto campus without the express permission of a senior member of staff. Sadly, a number of pupils have flouted that rule this term. Mr Curtis and Miss Andrew will be reminding pupils that their car, if parked on campus, may be clamped. There will be no fee for the removal of the clamp but it will be an inconvenience. Additionally, some pupils have taken to parking in the Church Room’s car park at the beginning of Church Lane. This is private property and for the sole use of visitors to the Parish Church and the Church Room.

Whilst I can understand that giving pupils a car to drive to and from school may be advantageous to home logistics, the College is unable to provide anything other than limited parking by the boathouse or on the turning circle outside Court Mead, the Headmaster’s house. Pupils will need to find legal parking on public roads which is certainly going to be increasingly difficult.

Year 10 - GCSE Sculpture Workshop
Thursday 27 April 2017

I am writing to inform you of the Art Workshop I have arranged with a visiting artist for Year 10. The artist, Darcy Turner, is based in London and designs, sculpts, invents and manufactures.

One of the Assessment Objectives for GCSE Art is creative development of ideas and experiences. This workshop will enable pupils to gain practical experience in a new artist’s technique.

Pupils will have the opportunity to collaborate within peer groups. They will be able to produce a sculpture and they will also have the opportunity to ask questions and observe an artist at work.

There will be a fee of £20.00 per pupil to cover the cost of the day’s Workshop and this will be added to your school bill. If you would like your son to take part in this Workshop, can you please complete and return the attached form.

Mrs Hema Gillings
Head of Art and Design

As half term approaches, can I once again remind pupils and parents that haircuts must comply with the school’s guidance. There should be no steps and hair should be no shorter than grade 3.

A number of pupils are on a final warning and will be sent home immediately should they return after the holiday with an unacceptable haircut. Others must not risk being placed on this list.

Mr Nick Brown
Deputy Head Pastoral

Request for Speakers

As a way of educating our pupils about upcycling, the DT Department is seeking donations of small computer speakers to provide integrated sound in some exciting new builds of retro-style gaming machines. If you have any old speakers that you no longer use, please give them to pupils to bring to the DT Department, if possible within the first couple of weeks after half term.

The National Citizen Service Visit for Year 11 PSHEE

The National Citizen Service (NCS) is a Department of Education scheme run in conjunction with Oxfordshire County Council. As part of our PSHEE programme a team from NCS will be visiting Shiplake College on Wednesday 22 February to talk to the Year 11s and an outline of their visit is in the letter attached here.

The programme is highly recognised by UCAS and is quoted several times during the application process as nurturing desirable traits in prospective students. Participation in NCS helps to demonstrate to university admissions tutors that young people are well rounded and socially engaged. Altogether, a very worthwhile programme.

Head of PSHEE

Saturday Absences for Sports Fixtures

A reminder that if you wish for your son/daughter to be absent from school for a Saturday sports fixture, you must make the request through the appropriate channels and submit the Absence Request Form. This form must be authorised/or not by the Headmaster. The Headmaster and the Headmaster alone is the only person who can authorise such absence. Emailing a Housemaster or a coach is not sufficient. In addition, if a pupil is ill on the morning of a fixture and is unable to attend, the Head of that sport and the pupil's coach must be informed by email that morning to avoid delays.

Director of Sport and Head of PE

Sports Dinner

Please note that the deadline for purchasing tickets for the Sports Dinner is Monday 20 February. We are pleased to be allocating a number of parents to create tables - this is a wonderful opportunity to get to know other Shiplake parents after all! We are also in need of a few more raffle and auction prizes so please do get in touch ( if you are able to help.
