Fee Affordability and Parental Time Survey

Parents will have received an email from the Chairman of Governors, The Right Hon Tim Eggar, on Monday inviting them to complete a fee affordability and parental time survey. Baines Cutler have been appointed to help us gain a deeper understanding of our fee-payers, by providing information about the sources of parental funding for school fees (and the potential risks to those sources), income profiles of our parents, and the work/time commitments and pressures that you are facing. We will then be able to make the best possible decisions around fee increases, bursary budgeting, flexible offerings and, consequently, our strategic and financial planning for the future. We appreciate that it asks for some personal information but we stress that it is totally anonymous and confidential and that the independent company conducting the data analysis will not know who has responded either.

Can I please urge you to find the time to complete the survey – it should take about 20 minutes. Please submit only one survey per family/fee payer. I hope you will see that it is in everyone’s best interests to achieve the most comprehensive picture as possible. Please click the link below and use the school identifier 4122 to enter the survey itself. We would appreciate responses by Wednesday 16 November if possible, although the survey official closes on Monday 28 November. Thank you for your support.

Thank you in advance for your help and support.

Shiplake College Christmas Fayre

Saturday 12 November 2016, 10.00am to 2.30pm in the Sports Hall. Sample delicious mince pies and mulled wine while you get your Christmas shopping underway at the 45+ stalls. Bring the children along to visit Santa at his Grotto! See attached flyer.

Parents may be interested in reading an article that was printed in last week’s Henley Standard, regarding the proposed amphitheatre, as announced at Prize Giving last year. Not only would this be a stunning addition to the landscape overlooking the river, but will be a much-needed space for performance, outdoor teaching and other uses. If we proceed, the timescale of the project will depend on when the funds are available as we wish to cover costs by donations and other sources instead of fee-income. If you have any queries please do get in touch.

National Anti-Bullying Week

Next week marks the annual Anti-Bullying Week and, as ever, we will be addressing the issue in assemblies and tutor meetings. The theme this year is “Power for Good” and various activities are planned to look at positive ways of ensuring that all our pupils are aware of the impact that bullying has on the lives of young people. It will also be an opportunity to remind pupils of our expectations and policies.

You may find the link below to the Anti-Bullying Alliance’s website interesting.

We have also found a useful booklet which contains advice to parents, carers and families, details of which can be found here:

Exemplum Docet Society – Can You Help?

Invitations will shortly be sent out for pupils to join our prestigious Exemplum Docet Society. The EDS exists to provide additional academic enrichment opportunities to those pupils in receipt of an academic award and to those pupils who have been identified as exceeding our expectations in their school reports. Part of the provision involves regular visits from external speakers on topics of interest (for example, current affairs or areas of expertise). If any parents would like to offer their time and come in and talk to the EDS, please contact me. This will be a great opportunity for our pupils although I must warn you, their questions are likely to be very challenging!

Year 9 - Options Guide

The Year 9 Options Guide is now available online here. A copy will also be posted to parents very shortly. However, if any parents collected a copy at the Year 9 Parents’ Conference please email me so that we do not send another. The full timeline of the GCSE subject choice process can be found on page 21 of the Options Guide.

Year 13 Parents’ Conference

The Year 13 Parents’ Conference is on Friday 25 November (Sports Hall, 3.30pm - 6.00pm) prior to the start of the next Exeat weekend. Following a very successful trial, we have now introduced an online booking system in order to better manage the timing of our Parents’ Conferences. We kindly request that all Year 13 parents visit where 7-minute appointments with individual teachers can be booked and schedules created very easily. Full instructions can be viewed here and a video demonstration is available here.

We respectfully ask that all parents make appointments in this way as it will no longer be possible to see teachers without an appointment. We do hope that you find this facility useful and please contact me should you encounter any problems.
