New Reporting – A Parents’ Guide

During the last academic year, we reviewed our reporting procedures at the College in order to ensure that our systems were in the best interests of our pupils. Following this review, we are delighted to announce that there will be some changes to pupils’ Progress Reviews this half term, in terms of both the content, and the appearance of reports sent to parents. A full illustration of the new reporting system can be viewed here.

Year 9 Parents’ Conference – New Booking System

The Year 9 Parents’ Conference is on Tuesday 18 October (Sports Hall, 3.30pm-5.30pm) prior to the start of half-term. We look forward to welcoming you to this event and pupils will also be given a copy of the GCSE Options Guide to take away. In order to better manage the timing of our Parents’ Conferences, we are trialling an online Parents’ Conference Booking System. We kindly request that all Year 9 parents visit where 5-minute appointments with individual teachers can be booked and schedules created very easily. Full instructions can be viewed here and a video demonstration is available here. We do hope you find this facility useful – feedback will be welcomed.

Welcome to Year 10 Guide

A booklet outlining the format of all GCSE qualifications for Year 10 pupils is now available to view online here. It is highly recommended that Year 10 pupils and their parents familiarise themselves with the overview of each subject, particularly if there are assessments taking place in Year 10. We do hope pupils and parents find this information useful.

Year 11 - Sixth Form Subject Options

Thank you to those who attended the Sixth Form Subject Fair yesterday evening; we hope the address and opportunity to speak to Heads of Department about potential Sixth Form subject choices was useful. For those who were unable to attend, the Sixth Form Options Guide has been posted to you today and you can watch my address to parents here.

Please click here for the Statement of Intent form, which we ask all pupils and parents to please review and submit by Tuesday 18 October. This form includes provisional subject choices at this stage. These will help us build the option columns from which you will eventually select your final subject combinations, and will also inform conversations about future higher education plans and career pathways. Ensuring that all of our pupils start Year 12 on the right combination of Sixth Form courses for them, and therefore achieve the best possible outcomes at the end of Year 13, is our key goal in this process.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions, or if you require any clarification regarding the A Level reforms and subsequent changes to the Sixth Form curriculum offered at Shiplake from September 2017.

Deputy Head Academic

Year 12 - BTEC Business Course

As part of the BTEC Business course, Year 12 students are required to plan and run a business event. Last year proved to be a real success with the events being very well supported and over £5000 being raised. This year, we have two groups who are running separate events in aid of the Sue Ryder Hospice at Nettlebed.

One of our Year 12 BTEC Business groups have decided to run a ‘games event’ that will run throughout the day and culminate in an event open to all boarders and day boys in the Great Hall on Tuesday 15 November. If you have any fun and exciting ‘fete style’ games that could be used for this event, or if you have experience of running a fete or games evening, the BTEC Business group would love to hear from you.

We have recently received the following notice from Schoolblazer, our online uniform suppliers:

It is with a heavy heart that we are forced to write to inform you that there will be an increase to our retail prices of 5% on all lines on 1 November 2016. We are confident that this will not change our competitive position as all retailers face very similar pressures and we would therefore expect similar, or even higher price increases to be seen elsewhere.

We accept that this is unwelcome news. By way of reassurance we would point to our Summer Performance reviews which showed us achieving exceptional levels of customer satisfaction driven by our improved operational performance, with over 95% of all Schoolblazer customers expressing their satisfaction with our service. We will, of course, do everything in our power to mitigate any further price increases.

If any parents have any queries with regards to the information above, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

Mr Neil Walne

Private Cricket Tuition

A reminder to contact me if you would like your son/daughter to have private cricket tuition here at the College.

There will be six one hour sessions on a Thursday evening (Juniors 6.00pm - 7.00pm and Seniors 7.00pm - 8.00pm), as well as lunchtime sessions for Lower School. All sessions will begin on Thursday 3 November running until Thursday 8 December. The cost is £48.00 for the six sessions and with your permission I will add this to the College bill.
