Events and Reminders

 

Careers Drop-in Sessions – On Monday afternoons, all students have the opportunity to attend drop-in sessions at lunch time, from 1.30pm, for support with any careers queries or to simply find out more about potential careers. The sessions are held in the Careers section of the Library with Sally Saunders, Head of Careers.

 

Great Ideals Reaffirmed: Leighton Park School and The Second World War’ - The School Archivist, John Allinson, and his co-authors Charlotte Smith and Penny Wallington have published a new book, which you can read more about here. Books are now on sale at £8.50. If you would like to buy one or more copies please fill in the attached form. If you wish us to post the book(s) to you please note UK p+p is £2.50 extra for one or two books. Non-UK postage: please enquire.

 

Wednesday 13th November: Soloists’ Concert – The Soloists’ Concert will take place tonight at 7.00pm in the Main Hall, Michael Malnick Centre and should finish by 8.30pm. All are welcome to attend. Please find the evening’s programme attached.

 

Friday 15th November: AMICUS Mufti Day – To launch the 2019 Toy Collection Appeal, AMICUS is holding a Christmas colour themed Mufti Day. It will be £2 on the day and £1 in advance. Please hand the money to your Tutor or Head of House. The money raised will go towards mental health charity, MIND and to support Old Leightonian, Kirsty Walker, who chose to donate to the charity earlier this year during her epic cross-country cycle ride.

 

Friday 15th November: Christmas Shoebox Appeal – The School Houses are appealing for you to join them in generously packing shoeboxes for less fortunate children around the world. National collection week will run until Monday 18th November. Please donate your box at Field House by the end of the week, Friday 15th November, in order for the School to deliver it to a local drop-off location. Details of what to pack, by age group, can be found here. Alternatively, Samaritan’s Purse have launched a new app where you can donate £20 for a box to be packed on your behalf. Should you have any questions, please contact Alex Leighton, Deputy Head of Field House.

 

Friday 15th November: Scholarship Applications Deadline – We are keen to continue to encourage applications from our talented students for scholarships. Scholarships are available to those joining Year 7, Year 9 or Lower Sixth in September 2020 in Art, Drama, Music, Dance and Sport. If you would like to apply please see our Scholarship Booklet for more details and complete the appropriate Scholarship Application Form by Friday 15th November. Academic Scholarships are also available. The process for internal Academic Scholarships is not reflected in the Scholarship Booklet. If you would like to apply for an Academic Scholarship please contact Karen Gracie-Langrick or the Admissions team.

 

Tuesday 19th November: JBH Speech Competition - Parents and students are warmly invited to attend this year's JBH Speech Competition, taking place in the Main Hall, Michael Malnick Centre at 7.00pm. As one of the iconic events in the Leighton Park calendar, the JBH returns for the 105th year. It is an evening of exceptional public speaking, with this year's topics including why everyone should be pro-choice, why GMO's are the future of food and why free will is a farce. This unique competition also encourages audience participation with an opportunity to heckle the speakers.

 

Wednesday 20th November: Jazz Infusions Concert – The Jazz Infusions Concert will take place at 7.00pm in the Main Hall, Michael Malnick Centre on Wednesday 20th November. All are welcome to attend.

 

RSVP Wednesday 20th November: Meet the Head – Parents are invited to an informal chat with members of the Leadership team and Matthew Judd, Head at 6.00-7.00pm, to answer any questions and talk about School life and the work that we do here. Attendance is entirely optional, please RSVP by Monday 18th November if you wish to attend. The venue will be confirmed in due course. The event is followed by the Jazz Infusions Concert.

 

Friday 22nd November: Fryer Parent Tea - Parents and guardians are invited to the Fryer Parent Tea which will take place on Friday 22nd November in Fryer House. This is an informal gathering of parents across both year groups in Fryer House. Whilst staff will be there, it is primarily an opportunity for parents to meet each other. The PSC Nearly New Shop will also be open from 4.30-5.30pm. If you should have any queries, please contact Adrian Stewart, Head of Lower School.

 

Friday 22nd November: Nearly New Shop - The Nearly New Shop, run by our Parent and Staff Community (PSC), will be open on Friday 22nd November, from 4.30-5.30pm, in Fryer House. Donations of sports kit or school dress that are no longer needed are welcomed. RSVP Tuesday 26th November: Parent Staff Community (PSC) Committee AGM and meeting – All parents, guardians and staff are invited to attend the PSC Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Committee meeting which will be taking place on Tuesday 26th November. The AGM will begin at 6.30pm in the Cadbury Room, Old School and finish at 7.15pm, followed by a committee meeting from 7.15pm to 8.30pm. This year’s agenda and minutes from the 2018 AGM are attached here. Please email psc@leightonpark.com if you have questions or would like to attend. 

 

Friday 6th December: Lurner Prize 2019 – The Art Department are calling for creative offerings from across the School community for this year’s Lurner Prize. Be it painting, drawing, sculpture, creative writing, short film, textile or simply something handmade from the last 12 months - get involved! Please mail Mark Wood with a photo of your entry or drop it into the department by Friday 6th December to be considered in the running. The top ten entries will be shortlisted in December ahead of showcasing them and the ‘winner’ will be announced at Christmas Collect.

Thursday 23rd January: English Theatre Trip - As part of their wider reading and enrichment in English, Year 7 students are being offered the chance to attend the fantasy comedy ‘Wyrd Sisters’ by Terry Prachett at the Progress Theatre, Reading. Tickets will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, at the cost of £10. Please see the attached letter for more details and if your son/daughter would like to attend please complete the online form by Monday 2nd December. RSVP Friday 22nd November: Parents’ Consultation Evening – Parents and students are invited to discuss progress in the first year of GCSE study. Please see the attached letter for more information and details of how to book an appointment, which will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Booking is now open and closes on Thursday 21st November at 2.00pm. If you should have any queries, please contact Beverley Eldridge, Head of Years 10 and 11.

 

RSVP Thursday 12th December: GCSE English Trip, Romeo and Juliet – Year 10 and 11 students are being offered the chance to attend ‘Romeo and Juliet’ as part of their curriculum in English Literature. Tickets will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, at the cost of £10. Please see the attached letter for more details and if your son/daughter would like to attend please complete the online form by Monday 18th November. RSVP Africa 2020 – Those interested in the Africa 2020 trips to Tanzania and Uganda, should be aware that places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis on receipt of the deposit and a completed application form, which must be returned to Helen Taylor. Please see the attached document for key trip information. If you should have any queries please contact, Helen Taylor, Head of Sixth Form, who will be able to forward enquiries to Beth Chapman from Inspire Worldwide if necessary.

Please complete the form here if your son/daughter would like to attend and ensure your son/daughter also completes the Google form for their menu choices by Monday 26th November here. UCAS Applications – UCAS applications should now have been submitted, unless students are yet to attend an Open Day at an institution in which they are interested. If you have any queries about the application, please contact Helen Taylor, Head of Sixth Form.

 

Friday 6th December: Sixth Form Christmas Dinner - It is our pleasure to invite students to the Sixth Form Christmas Dinner on Friday 6th December, from 7.00pm to 10.00pm, in Oakview. Please complete the form here if your son/daughter would like to attend and ensure your son/daughter also completes the Google form for their menu choices by Monday 26th November here. The cost of the meal will be £25.
