All Parents and Guardians


Extreme Weather Procedure: Given the recent temperatures we would like to remind parents and guardians of our extreme weather procedure. An announcement will be posted at the top of the homepage on the School’s website, linking through to further information, should it be necessary to close the school to ensure safety. If you would like to read the procedure in more detail, our Extreme Weather Policy can be accessed here.

Games/PE/Dance Lesson Absences: If your child is unable to take part in a Games/PE/Dance lesson due to injury or ailment, please email the following staff to notify them of this so appropriate alternative arrangements can be made: Housemaster, Tutor, Jez Belas, Director of Sport/Beth Butler, Head of Dance.


Website Feedback
We are currently working on a new website for the school and would appreciate your input on making the navigation as intuitive as possible. If you are able to spare 3 to 5 minutes to complete a short activity here we would be thankful for your help.


Treasure Island Merchandise If you would like to purchase a Treasure Island DVD (£15) or photobook (£25) as a memento of last term’s whole school production, please do so by clicking here. Orders should be placed before Friday 15th February 2019.


 


Events and Reminders


Thursday 24th January: Boarding Review Meeting – Parents and guardians are warmly invited to attend the meeting being held tomorrow regarding plans for the future of boarding at Leighton Park. If you would like to attend, please park in the Grove car park accessible via the Shinfield Road entrance. The meeting will be in Peckover Hall from 6.15-7.45pm.

RSVP Saturday 26th January: Leighton Park’s Family Quiz – The PSC are seeking volunteers to help out at the Family Quiz this Saturday, 26th January. Please click the link here to view which slots are available and to sign up. If any parents, guardians, staff or students would like to attend, tickets are £12 for adults and £8 for children and include a hot meal. Please see the poster here. Monday 28th January: Film Club – Please note Film Club is not on next Monday, 28th January.

Wednesday 30th January: Music Scholars’ Concert – All are welcome to attend the Music Scholars’ Concert in Main Hall next Wednesday, 30th January, 7.15-9.00pm.

Thursday 31st January: Grove House Parents’ Tea – A reminder that next Thursday, 31st January, is the Grove House Parents’ Tea 4.30-5.30pm. All parents and guardians of Grove students are welcome.

RSVP Tuesday 5th February: Chinese New Year Celebrations – Students are invited to attend a Chinese New Year Dinner at China Palace, Reading, on Tuesday 5th February. Please read the attached letter for more information and if you think your child would like to attend, complete the online form and pay the cost of the trip, £25, by Friday 1st February. If you have any queries about the trip please contact Lan Worrall, Mandarin teacher.

Thursday 7th February: Harry Potter Book Day – Save the date for Harry Potter Book Day where there will be fun and interesting lectures in Peckover Hall during Activities, 4.30-5.30pm. Please see the poster for more information about the event.

RSVP Thursday 7th February: Drugs Awareness Talk – Please read the attached letter from Eddie Falshaw, Deputy Head, regarding the Drugs Awareness Presentation that will be taking place on Thursday 7th February in Main Hall from 6.00-7.30pm. The presentation is open for all parents and staff at Leighton Park to attend and will be led by Bob Tait. The event is designed to follow on the work the school has been doing with the whole student body over the course of last term and will also share information on hosting parties for teenagers which we think parents will find helpful. Please RSVP to Sarah Gill, School Office Administrator, indicating if you would like to attend.

Friday 8th February: EXPO 2019 – All students, parents and guardians are invited to attend our eighth annual public lecture series, EXPO 2019, on Friday 8th February. The event will be held in the foyer of the Michael Malnick Centre, 6.30-8.30pm. Please see the poster here. Please park at Grove car park accessible from the Shinfield Road entrance.

RSVP Monday 4th March – Friday 8th March: Book Week We are delighted to announce that we will be celebrating Book Week again this year. Please see the attached letter and poster for more information. Please complete the online form by Friday 1st March, detailing whether you give your consent or not for your child to purchase books from the Book Shop which will be held in the Cadbury Room. Year 7

Tuesday 5th February: School Photographers – Please note that on Tuesday 5th February school photographers will be visiting to take photographs of students in Year 7, 8 and Upper Sixth. Parents will be given more information and the opportunity to purchase these photographs in due course.


RSVP Tuesday 5th March: Author Steve Cole – Fryers will have the opportunity to meet author Steve Cole, on Tuesday 5th February. Steve will be delivering a talk to Fryers during Book Week and students will have the chance to purchase some of his books. Please complete the online form by Friday 1st March, confirming whether you are happy for your child to purchase books at this event. Year 8

Year 9

Tetnus, Diptheria and Polio Vaccination – Please read the attached information pack and note that the immunisation consent forms will be sent out shortly. Please complete the forms as soon as possible detailing whether you give your consent for your child to receive the diptheria, tetanus, polio and meningitis ACWY vaccination. If you have any queries please email the Health Centre or phone them on 0118 987 9566.


RSVP Friday 1st February: GCSE and IGCSE Options Information Evening – Parents and guardians of Year 9 students are invited to attend the GCSE and iGCSE Options Information Evening taking place on Friday 1st February in Peckover Hall, 6.00-8.00pm. If you would like to visit our Michael Malnick Centre for Music and Media, tours will be available from 5.30-6.00pm, prior to the start of the Options Evening. Please read the attached letter for more details about the evening. If you are planning on attending please RSVP to schooloffice@leightonpark.com by Tuesday 29th January.

RSVP Friday 8th March: Writing for Teenagers Conference – Year 9 students will have the opportunity to meet a variety of guest speakers at our Writing for Teenagers Conference on Friday 8th February. Year 10

RSVP Saturday 15th June – Friday 21st June: Montpellier Trip – Year 10 French students are invited on a trip to Montpellier, France, next term to enhance their language skills and enjoy immersion in French culture. If you think your son or daughter would like to attend please see the attached letter for more information and complete the online form by Monday 25th February. If you have any queries please contact Caroline Semeyn, French teacher.


RSVP Sunday 16th June – Friday 21st June: Spanish Trip to Malaga – Year 10 Spanish students are invited to attend a language school in Malaga next summer and enjoy absorbing some of the local culture. Please see the attached letter for more information and complete the online form if you think your son or daughter would like to attend. Please complete the form and submit payment by this Friday, 25th January, to secure your child’s place. Year 11

RSVP
Friday 25th January: Sixth Form Choices – Year 11 students have now received their mock results and we would like to collate their preferred Sixth Form subject choices. Please refer to either the IB Options Form or the A Level Options Form and encourage your child to complete these by Friday 11th February before returning them to Karen Gracie-Langrick, Deputy Head (Academic).


RSVP Friday 25th January: Parents’ Consultation Evening
– A reminder that Parents’ Evening for Year 11s is this Friday, 25th January from 6.15-9.00pm in Oakview. Please read the attached letter for more information and note that appointments with your child’s teachers should be made via the Parent Portal. The online booking system will close tomorrow at 2.00pm, Thursday 24th January. Please note that Elaine King, Art teacher, is unable to attend the evening due to illness. Mark Wood, Head of Art, will be available to meet parents who wish to discuss their child’s progress in Art. If you wish to make an appointment with Mark, please contact Christine Banham on 0118 987 9544 after you have booked all your other appointments with your child’s teachers online and she will make a manual booking for you for the evening. Lower Sixth

RSVP Monday 11th February: Sixth Form Politics Trip – Sixth Form Politics students are invited to attend a trip to Westminster Palace and Surpeme Court on Monday 11th February. If you think your son or daughter would like to attend please read the attached letter, complete the online form and submit payment of £25 as soon as possible. Upper Sixth

Monday 25th February - Friday 1st March: Upper Sixth Mock Examinations – Mock exams will take place during the week after Long Leave, Monday 25th February to Friday 1st March. All students have been sent the timetable for the week and it is important that they take careful note of the exact start time for each of their exams. You can view the timetable here. Students should assemble quietly in the foyer of Peckover Hall at least ten minutes before each exam is due to start, so that exams can start promptly. Please remind your child to bring the equipment required for their exam in a clear pencil case, or clear bag. They should also refer to the JCQ regulations in the attached document.
