Nearly New Shop – The Nearly New shop, which often runs alongside the Fryer Parent Tea, will not be available on Friday 17th January due to the presentation about the plans for the new Fryer Boarding Accommodation taking place in the Fryer Dining Room. If you would like to purchase any nearly new clothing, or arrange to donate garments to the shop, please contact psc@leightonpark.com.

RSVP Thursday 16th January: The Foyer Jazz Club Concert – The grand opening night of The Foyer Jazz Club will feature award winning, London-born saxophonist and composer, Alex Hitchcock. Alex will be joined by students and the Stuart Henderson quartet. The concert will run from 7.30-9.45pm with a short interval in the Michael Malnick Centre. Tickets are available to purchase here for £12 per person.

 

RSVP Saturday 18th January: Leighton Park’s Family Curry and Quiz – Tickets are available for Leighton Park’s Family Curry and Quiz, hosted by our Parent and Staff Community (PSC), which is taking place on Saturday 18th January from 7.00pm in Oakview. This is a great opportunity to pit your wits against other families (and perhaps staff teams) - mixed age group teams are a distinct advantage! There will be a licensed bar and all proceeds from the event will go towards the development projects supported by the Sixth Form Africa trips in 2020. Click here for the poster. Monday 20th January: PSC Book Group - All are welcome to join the PSC Book Group in discussing ‘The Doll Factory’ by Elizabeth MacNeal. The meeting will take place in the Library from 7.00-9.00pm on Monday evening with tea, coffee and biscuits. Please view the synopses of future books and meeting dates here. RSVP Tuesday 21st January: Parental Talk on Anxiety – The School is hosting a series of pastoral care workshops for parents during the next two terms. The first workshop will take place on Tuesday 21st January from 7.00-8.30pm. Due to high numbers of attendees there has been a change of venue and the workshop will now take place in Peckover Hall. The session will tackle how parents can identify signs and symptoms of anxiety and learn how to support their child using simple CBT techniques. It will be led by Olga Zilberberg, Parenting Practitioner. If you would like to attend please complete the online form here. Wednesday 22nd January: Soloists’ Concert – The Soloists’ Concert will take place on Wednesday 22nd January at 7.00pm in the Main Hall, Michael Malnick Centre, and should finish by 8.30pm. All are welcome to attend.

 

RSVP Friday 24th January: Talk from Shyam Bhatia - A fascinating opportunity to hear first-hand from Old Leightonian, former war correspondent and past winner of the Foreign Journalist of the Year Award, Shyam Bhatia. His book ‘Bullets and Bylines’ covers an amazing career at the front-line of Middle Eastern politics and meetings with global figures from Benazir Bhutto to Yasser Arafat. The talk will take place at 3.00pm in Peckover Hall, followed by refreshments. Please book your free ticket here. RSVP Monday 27th January: Chinese New Year Celebration Dinner - We are celebrating Chinese New Year with a meal at the China Palace in Reading Town Centre on Monday 27th January from 5.00-8.00pm. Saturday 28th March: National Quaker Schools’ Concert – A number of Leighton Park students are participating in the National Quaker Schools’ Choir Concert, to be held in York on Saturday 28th March at 7.00pm. RSVP Friday 17th January: Fryer Parent Tea – Parents and guardians of Fryer students are warmly invited to join other Fryer parents and Fryer staff for tea/coffee on Friday 17th January from 4.30-5.30pm in the Fryer Dining Room. Primarily, this is a parents’ social event, but we will also be taking this opportunity to explain a few changes that will be happening within Fryer House over the coming months as preparations are made to re-introduce boarding into Fryer from September 2020. We look forward to sharing the exciting plans and architects’ drawings with you. Adrian Stewart, Head of Lower School, and Keith Eldridge, Bursar, will be available to answer questions. Thursday 23rd January: Wyrd Sisters Theatre Trip - We are looking forward to the Year 7 theatre trip to see Wyrd Sisters at the Progress Theatre, as part of their wider reading and enrichment in English. If your son/daughter has booked a place on the trip please ensure they wear Collect Dress and have wet weather gear, as we will be walking to the Progress Theatre. We will be meeting at Fryer House, no later than 7.00pm and returning to Fryer House around 10.30pm. There will be an interval, therefore students are welcome to bring cash for snacks and drinks. Year 9

 

Thursday 16th January: Morrisby Aspirations Questionnaire – Tomorrow, Year 9 will be undertaking Morrisby Aspirations questionnaires during their PSHE lesson. Students will be need to bring their Chromebooks to this lesson. The questionnaire will provide students with an overview of suggested options subjects for GCSE and IGCSE. This is part of the Year 9 Options process which will be discussed at the Parent Information Evening on Friday 24th January.

RSVP Friday 24th January: Change of Venue for GCSE Options Information Evening - The MMC Main Hall is now available for the Year 9 GCSE and IGCSE Options Information Evening. We are thankful to Peter Scoggins and his team for enabling us to have the hall during the preparations for the School production. The Options Evening will now be held in the Main Hall, within the Michael Malnick Centre from 6.00-8.00pm on Friday 24th September. Please see the attached letter for more information. We would be grateful if you could confirm your attendance by emailing School Office by Tuesday 21st January, indicating the numbers attending.

 

RSVP Tuesday 28th January: Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio (Td/IPV), Meningitis ACWY Immunisations – The deadline for returning the attached form for your child’s upcoming immunisations was last Monday. If you wish your son/daughter to receive the injections please complete the form immediately. RSVP Saturday 20th June - Friday 26th June: Montpellier Trip - Year 10 French GCSE students have the opportunity to attend a residential language trip to the town of Montpellier in the South of France. The trip is expected to leave on Saturday 20th June, returning the following Friday, 26th June. The cost of this trip will be approximately £900. This price depends, however, on the number of pupils participating in the trip. If you would like to register your son/daughter’s interest, please complete the online form by this Friday, 17th January with a non-refundable deposit of £200. RSVP Sunday 21st June - Friday 26th June: Málaga Trip - Year 10 Spanish GCSE students have the opportunity to attend a residential language trip to Málaga in Spain. The trip is expected to leave on Sunday 21st June, returning the following Friday, 26th June. The cost of this trip should not exceed £750. This price depends, however, on the number of pupils participating in the trip. If you would like to reserve a place for your son/daughter, please complete the online form by Friday 24th January with a non-refundable payment of £750. Year 11 

 

RSVP Friday 31st January: Parents’ Consultation Evening - We are holding an important Parents' Consultation Evening on Friday 31st January from 6.15–9.00pm in Oakview, which is a change of timing and venue from the information previously circulated. We ask parents/guardians to please book their appointments online by logging onto the Parent Portal on the School website. Lower Sixth

 

Driving Lessons - A reminder for students and parents that driving lessons, whilst important, must not be booked at a time that will result in lessons being missed. This includes games sessions and PSHE lessons. An exception may be made for tests as we are aware that these cannot be scheduled for specific times. RSVP Work Experience Placement at Pfizer – A great opportunity has arisen for Lower Sixth students to complete a work experience placement with Pfizer in Hurley, during July 2020. Please see the attached notice for more information, as well as a draft agenda for the week. If you are interested in participating, please send a completed application form directly to Jonas Kamberas at Pfizer by Friday 31st January. However, it should be noted that students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. RSVP Thursday 25th – Friday 26th June: Residential Geography Field Trip - As an integral part of the Sixth Form AS Level and IB courses, the Geography Department are taking all Lower Sixth Geography students on a residential field trip to South Devon in June. The all-inclusive cost of the trip will be £280. This will include transport, accommodation, meals and tuition costs whilst at the centre. Please see the attached letter for more information and complete the online form with payment of £280 by Friday 14th February. If you should have any questions please do not hesitate to Oliver Staines, Head of Geography.
