Shiplake College Weekly Bulletin

Dear Parents

Welcome to the 2016-2017 academic year! We hope you have had a recuperative summer. A warm welcome to all Shiplake families, whether new to the College or returning for your seventh year!

This weekly bulletin is sent every Thursday afternoon (normally around 4.00pm!) and it is important that you take the time to read all the notices. It is not normally this long but there is a lot of essential information to pass on regarding the start of the new term so please keep reading!

Start of Term Arrangements

Please click on the links below for a reminder about next week's start of term arrangements. Please also see the website calendar, which includes details of the parent welcome receptions.

For those not bringing their children in for their first day, the school buses will resume service on Monday 5 September at the normal time i.e. arriving at the College for 8.00am. The buses will depart at the normal time of 6.15pm. Please refer to the Bus Information Booklet for full details.

Notes from the Headmaster

Mobile Phones

Following on from my message in the Bulletin of 26 May 2016, this is a reminder that as of Monday 5 September, pupils will be banned from using mobile phones between the hours of 8.00am (or, for day pupils, on arrival at school) until 5.45pm from Monday to Friday. Pupils will not be permitted to use their phones at break or lunchtime. Phones must be secured by each pupil in their allocated locker throughout the duration of the day. Pupils will be permitted to take their mobile phones with them on away sports fixtures.

These rules apply to all pupils, including the Sixth Form.

Parents wishing to contact their children urgently during the school day may do so via the School’s switchboard on 0118 940 2455. Pupils wishing to contact their parent/guardian urgently during the school day may do so by using a landline. Staff have been briefed on nearest landline access and how to obtain contact numbers if pupils are unaware of their parents’ telephone numbers.

Sanctions for misuse will commence with a school detention and be increased in accordance with the School’s rewards and sanction policy for those not adhering to school rules.

We believe this initiative will improve our pupils’ face-to-face interaction, help them forge stronger relationships and improve their communication skills, all of which should ensure they have the best opportunity to be as confident and successful as possible when leaving school, as well as improving their experience within school.

Emails
Following a successful trial last term, we will continue to avoid sending emails between the hours of 8.00pm and 7.00am. Emergency matters may be dealt with by telephone. Please click here for the original Bulletin notice.

Saturday Expectations
A reminder that all pupils are expected in College on a Saturday for Open Mornings and if required for a fixture or training. If pupils are unable to attend permission will need to be sought at least seven days in advance, via the Headmaster, by completing and returning the Saturday Absence Form which can be found on the College website.

Year 13 Welcome Reception

There will be a drinks and canapés reception for all College House parents and students on Monday 5 September at 6.00pm in College House. A formal welcome to the Upper Sixth year at Shiplake College will be followed by an opportunity to meet up with your son’s academic tutor for 2016-2017. I look forward to meeting you all.

Mr Richard Curtis
Housemaster of College House

Touch Rugby, Beer Festival and Dog Show

The Touch Rugby and Beer Festival takes place on Saturday 10 September. Following the morning's fixtures vs Reading Blue Coat and the Old Boys' match vs Old Oratory Boys, all parents, pupils, former pupils and staff are invited to enjoy an afternoon of family fun, with a touch rugby tournament, a barbecue, and a dog show all taking place.

The Parents' Association will be hosting a cake stall and there will be hot drinks and a range of beers available. For the daring attendees (of all ages!) an inflatable gladiator joust and bungee run!

Timings for the day are as follows:

  • 10.30am: Shiplake 1st XV vs Blue Coat
  • 12.00pm: Old Vikings vs Old Oratory Boys
  • 1.30pm: Barbecue
  • 2.00pm: Touch Rugby, Beer Festival and Dog Show

There is still places on the parents’ team; please email Chelsi Challis if you are interested in playing.

Whole School Sponsored Walk: 19 September

Another important date for the diary is the biennial whole school 20-mile sponsored walk on Monday 19 September! Two years ago we raised £15,000 - can we beat that this time? Click here for a poster announcing the four charities being supported. All pupils will be taking part and are encouraged to raise as much sponsorship money as possible! Download a donation form here or click here for information about how to donate online (coming soon!).

Welcome from the Chaplain

Welcome back. I hope you all have had a good summer holiday. A very warm welcome to all our new students and their parents who have joined us this year. I would like to draw your attention to the Beginning of Term Service on Sunday 11 September. This takes place in the Great Hall at 8.00pm. The Service is very informal, lasting approximately 30 minutes. It is a nice way to start the academic year with refreshments served after the Service. This service is open to all students and their families. (Dress code is smart casual for students).

I would also like to remind parents that they can contact me if they have any worries or concerns at any time on my school email - scousins@shiplake.org.uk or my direct office number - 0118 940 5258.

Reverend Stephen Cousins
Chaplain

Expedition Society

Please see the attached for details of the next Shiplake College Expedition Society trip to Kenya, taking place in July 2017. Please note the deadline for registering your interest to take part is the end of October. Spaces are limited so get in touch soon!

Mr Darius Bluck and Mrs Jenny Nunes

Sports Fixtures

We will continue to include a letter about the forthcoming Saturday's fixtures arrangements in each weekly bulletin. In the meantime, please go to www.shiplakesports.org.uk for an overview of the term's fixtures as they stand.

OPRO Mouthguard Fittings

We have arranged for OPRO to visit the College on Wednesday 7 September 2016. OPRO provide custom mouthguards to offer the best defence against oral-facial injuries and concussions in contact sports. All new pupils will have impressions taken unless we are informed in advance that a fitting is not required. The cost, about £45, will be added to your next bill.

Mr Sam Beckett
Head of Rugby
